Governoren - Foyn Harbor, Antarctica, 1915
A Whaling Factory Ship
Originally a cattle carrier, the
Governoren became one of the most advanced and largest floating whaling factory ships of its era.
On January 27, 1915, while at sea, it exemplified the ingenuity of the time, serving as a fully-equipped facility for hunting, processing, and rendering whales into oil and other valuable products.
The ship's vast capacity was legendary, producing over 100'000 litres of whale oil on a single mission.
However, as a 1915 whaling expedition concluded, a celebratory party aboard the
Governoren turned catastrophic.
A dropped lamp sparked a fire, igniting the ship’s cargo of whale oil. Despite efforts to save the vessel, the captain grounded it at Foyn Harbor, ensuring the safe evacuation of all 85 crew members. While no lives were lost, the ship and its cargo were destroyed.
Today, the rusting wreckage of the
Governoren rests at Foyn Harbor, a relic of the whaling industry’s history and a poignant reminder of the vessel's storied past.
