Kee Bird - Humbolt Glacier, Greenland, 1947
The Story of the Kee Bird
In 1947, the
Kee Bird, a U.S. Air Force Boeing B-29-BW-95
Superfortress bomber (serial 45-21768, cn 13662), was forced to make an emergency landing on Greenland’s remote Humboldt Glacier during a reconnaissance mission. Stranded in the Arctic, the crew miraculously survived and was rescued days later, leaving the aircraft behind.
Decades later, an ambitious restoration effort in 1994 aimed to fly the
Kee Bird off the glacier. Despite significant progress, a fuel leak during taxiing ignited a fire, destroying the plane just as it was nearing flight readiness.
Today, the
Kee Bird remains lie on the glacier
